Cool-season crops only appear in spring/fall months, warm-season crops after your frost-free dates, and perennials/trees only in zones and months where they can establish. Each plant's "plants per sq ft" comes from its spacing, so the planner sizes the grid squares realistically and blocks oversized trees from tiny beds. Companion "avoid" rules also prevent incompatible neighbors.

The calendar shows when each crop can be sown or transplanted in your zone. It only lists crops that fit that month’s conditions: cool crops in cooler months, warm crops in frost-free months, and tender perennials/warm-climate trees only in warmer zones. Use it to pick the right month for a crop, then place it in the Garden Bed Planner at the suggested density.

Soil meters that measure Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) (often called NPK meters) are very useful for spotting nutrient deficiencies and are the gold standard. If you only choose one, even a simple pH meter to gauge soil acidity/alkalinity will greatly help your plant care. Some meters also track sunlight and moisture; these inputs will be added to PlantSimpleJoy™ in the future.
